In the spring of 2013, the National Indigenous Council of Elders (NICE) established a knowledge exchange forum called The Creation of Wealth, studying models for indigenous self-reliance. The first in a series of forums was June 2013 held in Winnipeg, MB where the concept was shared with over 100 participants from across Canada. The result of this gathering was 18 models of self-sufficiency, showing how communities working together can create wealth.
The first Creation of Wealth initiative focused on indigenous gaming and a working group was established at the second Creation of Wealth Forum October 2013 held at the Dunes Casino in White Cap First Nation, Saskatchewan. This gaming working group met again in January 2014, in another open forum attracting more indigenous gaming bodies. Together a drafted constitution was amended, ratified and the Indigenous People's Gaming Confederacy was launched with an interim board representing 13 First Nations and an open membership.
The National Indigenous Council of Elders (NICE) continued working on other Indigenous capacity building initiatives, to address the issue of Indian Trust Funds. Billions of dollars are in these various trust funds, held for first nations where little is publicly known about them. The forum held March 31 - April 2, 2014 at River Cree Resort in Enoch, Alberta provided amazing opportunities to learn about the Trust Funds.
June 23 and 24, 2014 in Long Plains First Nation, MB the fifth Forum is set gathering together the Philanthropy Industry representatives; lawyers, coordinators, sponsors, Foundations managers among others. This Foundations Forum will help to bring light to the capacity building potentials using various gift giving Foundations, including information on how they are created.
Ongoing work of NICE will develop the 18 models to creating wealth and self-sufficiency including: collective use of resources, creation of urban reserves, monetizing current assets, development of tourism and destination entertainment. The forums capitalize on sharing of one another's wisdom and triumphs and helping to build capacity for all Indigenous people in Canada to secure self-sufficiency.
